In Justin Amrhein’s recent series of sculptures, found objects are sourced based on their potential to be manipulated and transformed into ambiguous yet suggestive machines, using only paint. The transformation begins when the object is painted a vibrant, phthalo blue and becomes void of structure. Using only white, a linear framework of components are then painted in a manner reminiscent of architectural or schematic drawings. They become three-dimensional blueprints, defying the intention of a two-dimensional drawing on a three-dimensional surface meant to guide construction. By rendering these forms using only two colors of high contrast, the object’s dimensionality is compressed; the painted lines either accentuate or hide its physical properties. Definitions of sculpture, painting, and drawing are blurred. A nod to modernism is suggested, despite belonging to such a seemingly futuristic design. Varying in scale and form, the sculptures undoubtedly belong to the same family and suggest an ability to work in tandem with one another. When grouped together we see a clear connectivity and potential interdependence.

Forms alluding to motors, wires, buttons, pumps, switches, fans, hoses or control panels emerge. A specific purpose for these machines is distinctly implied, therefore a function is assumed. As the viewer, we are left with a lingering question: what do these objects do?   What if these enigmatic machines are discreetly performing their tasks unbeknownst to us? The artist addresses that possibility by assigning a purpose for the existence of these theoretical, futuristic products.  Inventions are typically created out of a necessity to solve a current human problem and that is the case here.  With the climate crisis at such an advanced stage there is no issue more pressing to the longevity of humanity then global warming.  How can we use our knowledge and advancements in technology to help regain balance in our environment?  Will there be a global network of machines designed to combat the affects of climate change?  Human ingenuity always seems to prevail and this body of work encourages that sentiment.  Our climate crisis can be averted if something is done collectively.  We have the blueprints.
